** 2013 LIST REVIEW AND UPDATE **
Publication of the updated RTE book is estimated to be completed in summer 2013. Until then, you can download a summary of the changes here:
Vascular plant changes: 2013-vasc-rank-changes.xlsx
Non-vascular plant, lichen, and fungi changes: 2013-nonvasc-changes.xls
Background information: Oregon Biodiversity Information Center (ORBIC, formerly Oregon Natural Heritage Information Center) is preparing to update its publication Rare, Threatened, and Endangered Species of Oregon.
Among other things, the rankings in this document are used by USFS and BLM to help develop their sensitive and strategic species lists, and by ORBIC to prioritize effort. We are requesting input
from users to help inform the review process. We would greatly appreciate it if you could review the attached spreadsheet and provide comments.
When reviewing the attached lists, please consider the following questions:
- Are there species on the list that should be dropped because their population is secure? We include all species that have federal or state status, as well as others that data
indicate may be of conservation concern.
- Are there sensitive species missing from the list that we need to add?
- Are there species for which the global/state ranks need to be reassessed? This is a fairly time-intensive process, so we are not able to review ranks for all species. We
appreciate your direction in helping me prioritize species that need ranking attention. Be warned, if you suggest we review a species' ranks, we will likely be contacting you for additional supporting information!
- Are there name changes that need to be incorporated? We try to follow standard, accepted taxonomy (typically we follow ITIS.gov), but sometime this is complicated.
- Are you aware of additional county or ecoregion distribution records?

Proposed Changes Spreadsheets
Proposed animal changes:2012animalchanges.xlsx (33 KB)
The proposed changes in this spreadsheet will be discussed at the Joint Oregon/Washington Rare Animal Species meeting on February 12, 1pm at Skamania Lodge. If you have additional suggested changes, email them to Eleanor Gaines (eleanor.gaines@pdx.edu) or bring them to the meeting. For a full list of animals tracked, see the above links.
Vascular plants, non-vascular plants, lichen, and fungi: with notes from the October meeting are available from the spreadsheet plantrecs2012.xlsx (updated 11/05/2012). We will continue to add recommendations as they come in and this spreadsheet will be updated with those changes.

One of the Oregon Biodiversity Information Center's main tasks is to list and rank rare, threatened, and endangered species in Oregon. Using our biodiversity
database of species occurrences throughout the state and by consulting with agencies, specialists, academics, and citizen scientists, ORBIC reviews and publishes this list every two to three
years.
Species ranks are important for natural resource management, prioritization of restoration or conservation efforts, and to highlight species that need more
research or protection. The ranks that ORBIC produces are shared internationally through the NatureServe network
of natural heritage programs and conservation centers, allowing information to be shared among several countries in the western hemisphere.
Definitions of ranks, lists, and abbreviations used in the RTE publications can be found on the RTE Definitions page.
